Little Book of Big Manliness

Strength and bravery are the two oldest characteristics of what we call manliness. Far back in history, it was strength that enabled men to hunt, defend, and provide. Bravery, in those times, meant facing the life-and-death struggles against nature. Strength remains a key component of manliness today. In the swirling winds of 2020, strength encompasses physical, emotional, and social dimensions. Bravery now involves being true to yourself while viewing the world through a different lens. The definition of manliness has evolved, much like contemporary art has transformed over the years.

Fernando Carpaneda, a prominent figure in contemporary art and punk art, once faced a life-threatening situation in Brazil for showcasing his artwork. Yet, he persevered; his art is now more widely recognized than ever, which I find incredibly manly.

I began collaborating with Fernando on CARPAZINE in 2015. The last bit of writing and editing I did for my first issue was for his "Just Penis" exhibit. It featured the most penises I had ever seen in one sitting, showcasing the boldness of contemporary art. Over time, I have witnessed some remarkable works. I must admit that I summoned a special kind of strength and bravery in my role as the literal straight man in this duo, and I believe my personal growth is indeed manly.

When each issue of CARPAZINE is complete, we often joke about the balance of sexual organs depicted (not in those exact words). However, in the pages of Little Book of Big Manliness: The Miniature Homoerotic Artwork of Fernando Carpaneda, there is no such balance; these pages predominantly feature male figures.
