Fernando Carpaneda's Pandorian Box brings together a collection of five books. This includes the artist's infamous assemblages made in the early 80's, exhibitions at CBGB’s in the 90’s, homoerotic sculptures from the start of the new millenium, and his paintings from 2020. Like Pandora’s Box from Greek mythology, Carpaneda’s box comes full of sinful, erotic, and anarchistic art. The artist is one of desire, interested in both investigation and instigation. Carpaneda challenges our perceptions of gender and identity, as well as questioning society’s labels on those who do not conform to accepted norms: Those of us that do not fit neatly into a category or box.
To open Fernando Carpaneda's Pandorian Box is to get in touch with emotions and desires. These feelings, that some declare punishments, live inside all of us.
In these times of censure and self-censorship, who will open Carpaneda's box?
